About
I am researching the regulation of female identity in the novels of Florence Marryat, and am currently drafting chapter two. I was daft enough to choose a writer who wrote around 70 novels. I've now read all of them, and fortunately my enthusiasm remains undiminished.
Other than Marryat, my interests are in other neglected women writers, such as Rhoda Broughton, Charlotte Riddell, John Strange Winter, Edna Lyall and Adeline Sergeant. I also have a penchant for Trollope on the quiet.
With Troy Bassett, I recently edited a scholarly edition of 'Notable Women Authors of the Day', updating the profiles of the 30 writers interviewed by Helen C. Black.
When I don't have my beak stuck in a potboiler, I run Victorian Secrets, a small press dedicated publishing books from and about the nineteenth century. I also work at the University of Sussex, providing research skills training to fellow PhD students.
