About
My current main focus of interest is around how professionals, parents and other carers involved with young people on the autistic spectrum acquire their knowledge and understanding of autism and the support infrastructures. I am asking questions about why accredited learning is privileged over non-accredited learning, and whether there is any form of community of practice (CoP) in the autistic spectrum domain, or a network of CoPs, or just a mess. My interest in this area stems from parenting a young man with Aspergers, facilitating a support group, and membership of many online support networks, as well as longstanding interests in organisations, community development and non-accredited learning.
Apart from my current research, I tutor on Open University Courses introducing computing and ICT topics, and have held an associate research fellowship in one of the OU CETLs where I undertook work in the virtual world of Second Life.
In a previous life, I worked for many years in statutory and voluntary social services, including managing two large voluntary organisations.
I am interested in consulting opportunities around teamwork, project management, and general organisational issues.
